Helena River - Mundaring Weir Downstream

The condition of the Mundaring Weir Downstream site (site code: HRDSMW/6163844), in the middle catchment of the Helena River, downstream of the Mundaring Reservoir, has been assessed on several occasions:

  • 21-22 November 2007
  • 19 November 2007 (one day only)
  • 24-5 November 2008
  • 17-18 November 2009
  • October 2010 - site dry
  • 20-21 November 2012

The assessment was conducted using standard methods from the South West Index of River Condition. Measures chosen for this assessment included fish and crayfish, macroinvertebrates, aquatic habitat, water quality (dissolved oxygen and temperature logged over 24h, and electrical conductivity, pH, colour, alkalinity, turbidity and nutrients), fringing vegetation, channel morphology, erosion, connectivity, local land use and flow.

Fish and crayfish

Seven fish and two crayfish species were found at this site across all sampling events:

  • Pseudogobius olorum (Swan River Goby)
  • Bostockia porosa (Nightfish)
  • Galaxias occidentalis (Western Minnow)
  • Nannoperca vittata (Western Pygmy Perch)
  • Tandanus bostocki (Freshwater Cobbler)
  • Gambusia holbrooki (Eastern Gambusia)
  • Perca fluviatilis (Redfin Perch)
  • Cherax cainii (Marron – smooth)
  • Cherax quinquecarinatus (Gilgie)

Only fish and crayfish are targeted by sampling methods. Other species that were caught and/or observed are listed below:

  • Palaemon australis (South-west glass shrimp)
  • Chelodina oblonga (South-western snake-necked turtle)
