The condition of the Barlee Brook site (site code: DR79BARL1/6081066), in the middle catchment of Barlee Brook, has been assessed on several occasions:

  • 19-20 August 2020
  • 1-2 March 2023
  • 24-25 February 2026

The assessment was conducted using standard methods from the South West Index of River Condition. Measures chosen for this assessment included fish and crayfish, aquatic habitat, water quality (dissolved oxygen, temperature, electrical conductivity, and pH logged over 24h, and colour, alkalinity, turbidity and nutrients), fringing vegetation, channel morphology, erosion, connectivity, local land use and flow.

For a sub-set of the assessments above, water quality loggers were deployed for extended periods (as listed below). This enables assessment of water quality responses to changes in climate, streamflow and factors such as the intactness of vegetation within the river corridor. Longer term deployment allows detection of sub-optimal water quality conditions, which can be missed during the standard 24-hour assessment.

Fish and crayfish

Five fish species and one crayfish species were found at this site during the assessments:

  • Bostockia porosa (Nightfish)
  • Galaxias occidentalis (Western minnow)
  • Geotria australis (Pouched lamprey, ammocoete)
  • Galaxias occidentalis (Western minnow)
  • Nannoperca vittata (Western pygmy perch)
  • Perca fluviatilis (Redfin perch) – non-native
  • Cherax cainii (Smooth marron)
  • Cherax crassimanus (Restricted gilgie)
  • Cherax preissii (Koonac)
