The Upstream Ephraim Gully site (site code: DR207MANJ3/6081074) was assessed on the 13-14 June 2023.

Only aquatic biota was assessed, using the standard methods from the South West Index of River Condition.

Fish and crayfish

Only three species of freshwater crayfish were found during the June 2023 assessment. This is not unexpected as this site remains dry for much of the dry season and the sample was collected immediately after first flows. It is likely that native freshwater fish will move through and forage at this site as the river becomes more connected during the wet season.

  • Cherax preissii (Koonac)
  • Cherax crassimanus (Restricted gilgie)
  • Cherax sp. nov. 3

Cherax sp. nov. 3 is a potential new species yet to be described, morphologically similar to Cherax preissii.

Koonac are one of the only native freshwater fauna that remain in habitats that dry completely, creating burrows that allow them to maintain contact with groundwater. Koonac will emerge from burrows as soon as the riverbed is inundated in order to forage and mate.
